Given the auspicious nature of this year’s Kids Choice Awards— its 25th year! — few were spared the threat of a green goo shower at Nickelodeon’s annual fete for kids, held live from the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Saturday.
“This year we are having the most slime ever,” promised host Will Smith, who opened the 90-minute show by leading Halle Berry to a front row target zone. As soon as the actress took her seat, she was doused from behind. Glee’s Chris Colfer got it right in the face (and mouth), and Taylor Lautner looked as if he was slimed by a cannon. And as usual, the ‘tweeners who filled the pit below the stage practically bathed in the icky (but non-toxic!) slop.
The show included performances by Katy Perry singing “Part of Me” and One Direction doing “What Makes You Beautiful,” while presenters (and potential slime victims) included Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hutcherson, Chris Rock, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Kristen Stewart. The venue was crawling with Secret Service because First Lady Michelle Obama was on hand to present the Big Help award to Taylor Swift for her assistance with tornado and flood survivors. (Lucky for the missus, she and the First Kids avoided a liquid-y reception).
As if the screams throughout the show weren’t enough to bring down the roof, Justin Bieber took the stage at the end to accept the orange blimp for best male singer. He and Smith were then hit by a tidal wave of slime.
More than 220 million votes were tabulated for this year’s awards — the most ever. And the winners are:
